Combining Optimus with 1D functional modeling and model-based systems engineering

A strong project-based multidisciplinary focus

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), a private graduate research institute established in collaboration with MIT, cultivates a new generation of researchers and entrepreneurs. Aiming to foster a spirit of innovation among its students, Skoltech’s Center for Design, Manufacturing & Materials (CDMM) has built a strong project-based multidisciplinary focus into its engineering courses.

Performing global system level optimization

One project deals with the detailed design and prototyping of a small tube-launched “switchblade” Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). As a typical example of a complex system built of physical and software components, UAVs provide an excellent opportunity to introduce engineering students to innovative product development approaches combining Optimus with 1D functional modeling, 3D engineering simulation and model-based systems engineering.
