As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and specifically large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT dominate headlines recently, it is inevitable that these technologies are transforming the role of engineers across industries. While AI has evolved hugely to change the way engineers design in the last few years, at Noesis Solutions, we have been exploring the technology with automated design tools along with our partners for over a decade and have learned many lessons along the way. We have embraced AI to enhance design capabilities, bringing more value to clients, and saving money and time in the preliminary design phases of projects.
Design knowledge management: Need of the hour
Engineering design is a knowledge-intensive process, and accessing and managing this knowledge is crucial for engineering companies. According to a McKinsey study, “Effective knowledge management can lead to a 20-35% increase in organizational performance.” With the recent advancements in Natural Language Processing, it has become more efficient to facilitate knowledge management in the design process by providing engineering teams with access to a vast array of relevant information from various design tools and processes.
Noesis AI Assistant
This was the trigger that led us to launch the Noesis AI Assistant, an AI virtual chat assistant of Noesis Solutions, that helps its users with instant, accurate information, and support on utilizing Optimus, our automation and optimization tool, taking our unmatched customer service to the next level. This multilingual, conversational AI virtual assistant, developed using state-of-the-art technology that integrates ChatGPT with a comprehensive Optimus knowledge database, covering all its latest features and functions, as well as best practices and troubleshooting techniques of the tool.
It provides its users with 24/7 support for queries regarding Optimus, through a secure, easy-to-use interface through which the users can receive real-time responses about topics related to the automation and optimization of their engineering workflows with Optimus and browse relevant topics. By enabling our users with an AI-powered language model like Noesis AI Assistant, we aim to deliver unmatched customer support with expertise and training, empowering our users to derive more value from Optimus.
The Noesis AI Assistant retrieves information from various Optimus documentations enriched with knowledge from training manuals, real customer support cases, FAQs, user manuals, etc. The model is not trained on any of the user queries and answers, and all interactions are kept anonymously, ensuring the protection of any confidential information. With the option to provide anonymous feedback, the team can further improve the Noesis AI Assistant by constantly updating the database, enabling the Noesis AI Assistant to generate fresh responses as needed. We are confident that it will add great value and seamless support for our users.
Challenges & the Future
The potential uses for LLMs extend far beyond text generation, holding significant potential to transform how engineers approach the design of projects. However, embedding Large Language Models (LLMs) typically raises significant confidentiality and privacy issues and compliance with legal standards such as GDPR or CCPA is crucial. Regular audits and security updates are essential to mitigate potential breaches. This has and will be our primary focus in developing and extending this feature. Balancing powerful functionalities with stringent privacy measures is key to maintaining user trust and safeguarding confidential information.
The use of ChatGPT in design knowledge acquisition, though still in its early stages, has already proved its effectiveness in providing more accurate, unbiased, and comprehensive information. We are consistently exploring ways to maximize its potential and extend it to AI assisted data analysis or workflow creation.
Our future work with large language models will evolve from providing text-based help answers to supporting AI-assisted data analysis by automatically generating plots and charts based on user requests. Ensuring user data remains protected and confidentiality of the interaction will be a primary focus. The goal is to extend the AI Assistant to rapid post-processing, offering our users, access to a wide range of plots with no limitations on styling or plot types.
