Engineers use simulations to understand, analyze and predict how their complex systems behave in the real world, and improves the quality and accuracy of their designs, from the earliest stages of design.
Simulations are used to analyze increasingly complex Multiphysics and system-level phenomena across sectors; however, complex products of today require iterative simulation cycles that not only take a long time, but also require domain expertise. Even though simulation is much faster than physical testing and prototyping, the market demands even more acceleration when it comes to innovation and time-to-market, for organizations to gain a competitive advantage in the market.
The most fundamental role of simulation is to make better decisions faster, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) are critical enablers of speed. In the era of digital engineering, AI/ML has been impacting nearly every industry across the world with tangible results from the earliest stages of design and analysis throughout the entire product lifecycle.
According to a McKinsey article, ‘Unveiling the next frontier of engineering simulation’, a survey conducted in partnership with NAFEMS, to explore the current and expected future state of simulation in product development, 60% of the respondents show an interest to integrated AI/ML based methodologies in the proof of concept or pilot projects of their product development process (Figure 1).
This market trend has been the biggest encourager for us to launch nvision, an AI-powered modelling tool by Noesis Solutions. Surrogate modelling has been in our DNA and is a part of the core family of technologies at Noesis Solutions for over 15 years, and we keep a close eye on the latest developments in AI/ML, and its impacts in the way engineers design. We noticed that organizations are actively seeking to expedite their design process, reduce the complexity of the system, and thereby enhance the product development process, and nvision was conceived and launched recently to fulfil those needs.
According to the same report referred to above, the expectations about the value provided by simulation are shifting; organizations of today are turning to digital engineering for a faster time-to-market compared improving product quality, which was the top business focus in the past (Figure 2). However, this does not mean that organizations are trading off accuracy with speed. It suggests that time plays a crucial role in product development, the same if not more, as accuracy.
This is where AI-powered modelling tools such as nvision comes into play. For e.g., In a new product kick-off meeting, when typically engineers try to estimate bounds for a design space according to the new requirements, an nvision model, trained and built with past simulation data, will enable them to start predicting the behavior of their candidate product in real-time and quickly come up with a possible design space for the new requirements. The need for quicker insights overshadows the need for accurate results in this case.
Surrogate modelling is not meant to replace simulations; it allows engineers to push their design boundaries and enrich their design space, while simulations can serve them with a high-quality model and then a high-quality product. With AI-powered surrogate modelling technologies such as nvision, engineers are enabled to discover the most promising regions of their designs or to highlight the regions that require more data for better quality, enabling them to move to real life tests with more confidence. With nvision, organizations can adapt AI/ML, in the early stages of product development process, enable spot on tests to reduce the cost, improve time-to-market and carbon footprint of product development.
As tools get faster and more accessible, we believe that organizations begin to use them as a standard part and accelerate the product development process. We are consistently evolving our product and service portfolio to adapt to the latest market and customer needs, and how our customers can leverage the use of AI/ML to gain competitive advantage.
