The Optimus-enabled blade optimization process has proven to provide a sound methodology, holding the potential to identify solutions that increase performance by 10% or more.

CIRA uses Optimus

CIRA, the Italian Aerospace Research Center, uses Optimus to explore innovative tiltrotor aerodynamic design concepts. Tiltrotor aircraft hold the potential to combine the vertical lift capability of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft. Blade morphing techniques have been investigated in order to successfully reconcile the need for sufficient hovering power with increased cruise speed requirements.

Easily integrate in-house software

Optimus was used for its capabilities to easily integrate in-house aerodynamics simulation software into an automated and repeatable simulation process. From the insights acquired through design space exploration and multiobjective optimization, a number of interesting blade morphing concepts have emerged. With most concepts progressed to prototype status, the Optimus-enabled approach delivered the basis for more detailed follow-on research.

As aerodynamics optimization workflows require easy access to many modeling and simulation tools, multiobjective optimization is much broader in scope than the application of algorithms.
